| Abstract | Coastal areas are dynamic and important environments for human occupation because of its location, and closeness to fluvial and coastal areas. The objective of this study is to analyze the evolution of land use in mangrove areas of Maranhão Island, considering a multi-temporal approach (1988 to 2010). Initially two TM/Landsat-5 images were registered and classified with good statistical indices, for these years, comparing the landscape changes related to the decrease of mangrove areas and increase of urban use, taking into account also some variables, such as the tidal regime that can generate differences in the results. This result was confirmed by the analysis of high spatial resolution WorldView-2 images which were also analyzed. |
